Sleep Apnea Therapy
Oral appliances are designed for moderate or mild snoring and sleep apnea, which can be triggered by repeated blocking of the airway. They are ideal for those unable to use CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). These devices are also excellent back-ups for CPAP users in case of power failures or mechanical breakdowns.
While CPAP therapy is the go-to treatment for sleep apnea, many of our patients prefer an oral device to CPAP. This device is typically an innocuous plastic appliance that fits in the mouth, much like an orthodontic retainer or a sports mouth guard. It helps stop the collapse of the soft tissues in the back of the throat and the tongue, allowing adequate air intake during sleep and keeping the airway open.
Please ask Dr. Hyde about treatment options, as sleep apnea may lead to serious and debilitating conditions such as stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, or congestive heart failure.
